How to Disable Content Advisor in Internet Explorer Without
a Password
Without a Supervisor Password, there is no way to disable the Content Advisor
in Internet Explorer. The password is encrypted in the Windows registry and
the only way to get around a lost or forgotten password is to edit the registry
and delete the key holding the password. Here's the procedure:
WARNING: This procedure
involves editing the Registry database for Windows. If you make a mistake while
editing the Registry, you could render Windows unusable. Use extreme caution
when editing the Registry and you do so at your own risk. If you do not feel
comfortable using Regedit, it's advised that you not attempt this fix.
- Click on Start, Run, and in the Open dialog type "regedit" to start the
Registry editor.
- Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE by clicking on the "+" sign to the left of
the handle key
- Expand the keys Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Policies\Ratings
- There is a key on the right side of the screen labeled "Key" that holds the encrypted Content Advisor
Password. Click once to highlight "KEY" and press delete. Confirm that you
want to delete this key and close Regedit
- Open Internet Explorer and click Tools and Internet Options
- Click on the Content tab and click on the Disable button
- The password is now blank and you will be prompted for a new password.
Enter a new password and confirm same. Content Advisor is now disabled.
